SHEA BUTTER

Available

Shea butter is sometimes used as a base for medicated ointments. Some of the isolated chemicals are reported to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, emollient and hygroscopic properties. Shea butter has been used as a sunscreen lotion with an estimated SPF 3-4 and some of its ingredients "have a limited ability to absorb ultraviolet radiation".

In Ghana, shea butter is either used as a food product or as a lotion to protect the skin during the Harmattan dry season.

In Nigeria, shea butter is used to manage sinusitis and relieve nasal congestion. Massage is done on the joints and other parts of the body where pain occurs.
