The
name of the herb comes from Euphrosyne, one of the three Charites, who was
characterized by joy and cheerfulness and it is a plant known since ancient
times for its use in eye care, hence its name in English (Eyebright).
It is used for eye disorders and infections (externally) and for
respiratory problems (internally).
In the first case, Eyebright is used either as a compress or for ocular
wash.
It is particularly effective in cases of eye infections, conjunctivitis,
eye tingle accompanied by secretions (acid, caustic tear), blepharitis,
hypersensitivity to light and cataract.
The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of Eyebright are mainly
due to the phenol-carboxylic acids it contains.
Internal use of Eyebright (beverage) is considered to effectively relieve
runny nose, sinusitis and generally affect positively all congestive
respiratory conditions (including those caused by allergies).
Eyebright can also be used as a mouthwash (wash or gargle) for inflammation
and infections of the mouth and throat.
