Turnera Aphrodisiaca

The name damiana probably came from the anxiolytic and relaxing effect of the herb, since in Latin (probably with the Greek word damazo), damiana "means" the one that tames ".

The dried leaves of the plant are currently used as a medicinal herb, while its tonic properties are attributed, for the most part, to damianine, a bitter substance with a relaxing effect on the central nervous system.

The use of damiana to stimulate sexuality, in cases of erectile dysfunction, has been supported by research, although the results so far refer to experimental animals. This property of the herb is believed to be based on its action as an aromatase inhibitor, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, thus increasing its concentration in the body.

Other traditional uses of damiana include lowering blood sugar, depression, anxiety and nocturnal enuresis.

Damiana also has sedative, antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, and mild laxative properties. Antitussives have also been reported. anti-asthmatic and general tonic properties for the respiratory system and indications for the gastrointestinal tract such as dysentery, indigestion and constipation. Anorexic-thermogenic properties have been attributed to this plant in many countries.
