Historically, dandelion has been sought after for a variety of medicinal properties, as it contains a large number of pharmacologically active compounds. Dandelion root is a registered drug in Canada, sold primarily as a diuretic and has been used as an herbal remedy in Europe, North America and China. It is used in herbal medicine, as a mild laxative to increase appetite and as a bitter plant to improve digestion. Its milky latex has been used as a mosquito repellent and as a folk remedy for the treatment of moles.

It has been used in herbal medicine to treat infections, bile problems (as a cholagogue) as it stimulates bile secretions and keeps cholesterol low. It stimulates the functions of the liver, as well as a gastric tonic.

Taraxacum has two particularly important uses, to promote the formation of bile and to remove excess water from the body in edematous conditions resulting from liver problems. The root, in particular, affects all forms of secretions from the body. Acting to remove toxins from the body, it acts as a tonic as well as a stimulant.

The plant is rich in vitamin A, C, D iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium.
